The concept behind the game is to teach children about hazing. In order to simplify this topic, I decided to focus on bullies. Hazing, along with bullies, is a growing problem in our country and our children need to be education in the topic in order to make a change in our society. Teaching children about the dangers of fits into many standards in the Florida Sunshine State Standards of Education involved in the subject of health care such as:
knows how personal health behaviors influence individual well-being
knows the ways in which the environment impacts health
knows how childhood injuries and illnesses can be prevented and treated
knows the importance of assuming responsibility for personal health habits
compares behaviors that are safe to those that are risky or harmful
knows strategies for avoiding threatening or abusive situations
knows the difference between negative and positive behaviors used in conflict situations
knows how to apply a decision-making process to health issues and problems
knows how to positively influence others to make positive choices
The children will receive the board game with a bag of items that are needed to play the game. Attached to the back of the game are the directions. The paper will read:
Beat the Bully
As you go through school, try to avoid the bully!
Up to 5 players
Ages 6 and up
Materials
Board Game
5 Game pieces
Game Cards
How to Play
The youngest player starts the game; followed by the person to his or her right.
Each player takes turns drawing a card.
The player will move his or her game piece to the color that is specified on the card.
- If a player draws a “BULLY” card, then the player will follow the instructions on the card.
- If a player draws a “Stood Up to Bully” card, then the player will follow the instructions on the card
In order to win the game a player must draw an orange card to land on the final square. Note: if a player does not draw an orange card, he or she will wait until their next turn to attempt to draw an orange card, forfeiting their turn each time they are unsuccessful in drawing an orange card.
Once you have drawn an orange card you are the winner and have beaten the bully.
In order to emphasize the topic more, the teacher may want to talk to the children
about bullies. He or she can inform children that if they are bullied they need to contact an adult and to not be afraid. The board game does not give much information regarding statistics on hazing. However, it does have the point that bullies are bad (so you move backwards if you pull a card) and to stand up to them (move forward if you pull this card). The game is made basic right now in order to accommodate children with learning disabilities. If the teacher wants to make the game for gifted students, he or she can have questions regarding hazing or bullying on each card that the children have to answer. If they get the question correct they may move their piece.
All in all, this game simulates the different stages of school that a child goes through. It attempts to tell the children that being a bully and being bullied is wrong. Teachers can teach this topic with health. Let the children know that if something happens to them, they can tell a parent, teacher, or an administrator. No matter what, children must be educated on this topic in order to make a change.

Timed Writing
In Joseph Campbell’s book A Hero With A Thousand Faces he describes the composite of a hero. He explains the steps that a hero must face along his journey. According to Campbell, he addressed that there are three main stages that a hero enters: Departure, Separation, and Return. Within each of these topics, he breaks them down into separate categories. The topic called Departure explains how the hero is called to his or her adventure along with different people or amulets that help them along their path. This part of a hero’s journey is basically them jumping into the unknown. The Separation describes their journey and the trials that they encounter along the way. The final topic, is the Return when the hero has accomplished his or her call and seems to have resolved their problem. Campbell believes that all heroes and stories fit into his outline of a journey.
Flannery O’Conner wrote a story called “A Good Man Is Hard To Find”. This is a story about a family’s vacation that ended with the encounter of a murder. The story describes the grandmother’s adventure with her family. Her departure occurs when her family wants to visit Florida; she wants to go to Tennessee. Reluctantly, she embarks on her journey accompanied by her family and her cat. While they are traveling, the grandmother tells her grandchildren stories to pass the time. Eventually she tells the children of a house with hidden tunnels and suggests to her son that they stop by and see it. The son finally agrees to the detour, however they get into an accident. As they are broken down on the side of the road a car pulls up next to them to assist them. To their dismay, the grandmother points out that he is a serial killer. This is the part of the journey that is considered the separation. The ending of the story consists of the return. The grandmother tries to persuade the ‘Misfit’ that he is a good man, however he ends up killing the whole family in the end.
Another story that we discussed in class that can fit the outline that Campbell designed is the “Indian Camp” by Ernest Hemmingway. A boy begins his departure by traveling with his father, who is a doctor, and his uncle. His father tells him that there is a woman there who is very ill. The separation occurs when the three men attempt to help the woman in pain. They find that she is pregnant and about to give birth, the only problem is that the baby is breached. The husband of the woman is on the bunk above her unable to assist because he had an accident with an axe three days before. The doctor finally helps the woman give birth to the child with his son watching. The return occurs when they three men roll the husband over to find that he has slit his own throat. On the way back from the village the boy inquires as to why the man slit his throat. His father tells him that some people can’t stand to endure the some things. The boy spends the rest of the ride home thinking about how he was never going to dies no matter what.
As you can see, Campbell’s outline can be applied to anything. Not every stage must be used to describe a story, but there is a general flow that a story follows. In my own journey to Eckerd College, I went through the same trials. I received my call when an Eckerd College Representative first approached me. Eventually I decided to attend Eckerd and I entered into my separation stage when I left home. In the beginning of my education here at Eckerd there were many trials I faced like meeting knew people and playing on a team with new teammates. Eventually I returned home and it allowed me to see that Eckerd College was the best school for me. It has taught me so much and I feel that it will be the best place that will prepare me for the future.

Nuwer Blog letter
I am a student that currently attends Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. As both a college student and an athlete I have both witnessed and research the act of hazing. I have seen how it can humiliate not only a child, but an adult as well. I have visited your website and I believe it can change many communities. One of the main reasons why hazing exists today revolves around the fact that most people are not educated in the topic, and they do not realize the severity of it.
I am writing to you today in support for your cause. I have researched many hazing cases that have occurred not only in the collegiate level of school, but in high schools, athletic teams, gangs, and even in the military. The numbers that I located were unbelievable. Dr. Susan Lipkins found that somewhere around 250,000 college athletes have experience some sort of hazing when trying to join a team. In a survey conducted by Alfred University, they found that ten percent of their participants were hazed before the age of nine. It still remains obvious that the “word” is not being spread.
Eckerd College is a Division II liberal arts school. It does not have a Greek Life like most colleges, so we are very different. Naturally, I never thought that hazing would be a problem on our campus because there were no fraternities or sororities. I took it upon myself to investigate if there were any hazing acts that occurred on our campus. It turns out that hazing has been committed everywhere you look. My neighbor provided an interview for me, which was incorporated into my research paper, of her account of the night in which she was initiation onto a team. At the time, she thought it was all fun and games, but when she looks back at that night, she realized how humiliating it actually was. Because of her, I wanted to see what the community was doing to try and stop these events from occurring; this is when I found your website.
After doing this assignment for my school, I now realize how wide spread hazing is. When I came across your website I found it to be very useful and beneficial for informing the public and creating an awareness of the problem. Thank you for trying to get the information across to everyone. Thank you for encouraging the people to get involved and post their opinions on your blog, because in the words of Stophazing.org, “If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem”.
