Lesson plan

The concept behind the game is to teach children about hazing. In order to simplify this topic, I decided to focus on bullies. Hazing, along with bullies, is a growing problem in our country and our children need to be education in the topic in order to make a change in our society. Teaching children about the dangers of fits into many standards in the Florida Sunshine State Standards of Education involved in the subject of health care such as:
knows how personal health behaviors influence individual well-being
knows the ways in which the environment impacts health
knows how childhood injuries and illnesses can be prevented and treated
knows the importance of assuming responsibility for personal health habits
compares behaviors that are safe to those that are risky or harmful
knows strategies for avoiding threatening or abusive situations
knows the difference between negative and positive behaviors used in conflict situations
knows how to apply a decision-making process to health issues and problems
knows how to positively influence others to make positive choices

The children will receive the board game with a bag of items that are needed to play the game. Attached to the back of the game are the directions. The paper will read:

Beat the Bully
As you go through school, try to avoid the bully!
Up to 5 players
Ages 6 and up

Materials

Board Game
5 Game pieces
Game Cards

How to Play

The youngest player starts the game; followed by the person to his or her right.
Each player takes turns drawing a card.
The player will move his or her game piece to the color that is specified on the card.
- If a player draws a “BULLY” card, then the player will follow the instructions on the card.
- If a player draws a “Stood Up to Bully” card, then the player will follow the instructions on the card
In order to win the game a player must draw an orange card to land on the final square. Note: if a player does not draw an orange card, he or she will wait until their next turn to attempt to draw an orange card, forfeiting their turn each time they are unsuccessful in drawing an orange card.
Once you have drawn an orange card you are the winner and have beaten the bully.
In order to emphasize the topic more, the teacher may want to talk to the children
about bullies. He or she can inform children that if they are bullied they need to contact an adult and to not be afraid. The board game does not give much information regarding statistics on hazing. However, it does have the point that bullies are bad (so you move backwards if you pull a card) and to stand up to them (move forward if you pull this card). The game is made basic right now in order to accommodate children with learning disabilities. If the teacher wants to make the game for gifted students, he or she can have questions regarding hazing or bullying on each card that the children have to answer. If they get the question correct they may move their piece.
All in all, this game simulates the different stages of school that a child goes through. It attempts to tell the children that being a bully and being bullied is wrong. Teachers can teach this topic with health. Let the children know that if something happens to them, they can tell a parent, teacher, or an administrator. No matter what, children must be educated on this topic in order to make a change.
